I looked through the Common Core of Teaching to identify the standard I want to focus on. It highlights the discipline-based professional teaching standards. From those standards I chose to focus on numeracy at an elementary level. To create meaningful experiences I implement technology into the instructions. Integrating technology in lessons helps children with different learning styles. Both visual and auditory learners benefit from learning math with technology. Children at risk can get important experiences and support through activities using technology.
I know an elementary school teacher who tells me the students are not expected to do even the most basic math without a calculator. What are your thoughts on this? Also, I have never heard an adequate explanation as to why the teaching of basics, like the multiplication table is falling out of favor. I am admittedly not a math person, so I don't know. But neither of these things sound like good ideas to me.
